This Fiber Optics
Experiment Kit is designed to teach and prepare individual for the
field of fiber optics technology and application. It
consists of 12 laboratory experiments to give a solid understanding
of fiber optics as an application of basic optics and laser principles.
It also stresses the importance
of hands-on technique. The lab
manual was written by a college professor and industry professional
and is based on actual college lab experience to give a good balance
of theory and application.
1.
Fiber Preparation and Light Coupling
Techniques for stripping
and cleaving fibers and techniques of coupling laser beam to fiber.
2.
Total Internal Reflection and Guided Wave
Observe total internal reflection
and determine the refractive index of a rectangular, acrylic rod
as a simulation of the guided rays in optical fiber.
3.
Numerical Aperture Measurement
Observe the light guiding
properties of multimode optical fiber, input mode excitation and
intermodal coupling. Determine the numerical aperture of two
different fibers.
4.
Singlemode Propagation and Numerical Aperture Measurement
Observe
the guiding properties of singlemode optical fiber. Determine the
numerical aperture.
5.
Fiber Optic Interferometry
Set up interferometry by
using single-mode fiber and demonstrate the phase preserving property.
6.
Fiber Polishing and Interconnection
Polish bare fibers and connectotize
the fiber terminals using SMA connectors and splices. Determine
the coupling loss.
7.
Misalignments in Fiber-Fiber Coupling
Examine in detail the loss factors in
fiber-fiber coupling.
8.
Fiber Attenuation Measurement
Determine the attenuation
constant in decibel of a plastic fiber.
9.
Semiconductor Source Coupling
Study the characteristics
of LED and laser diode source in relation to coupling of source
power into optical fiber.
10.
Fiber Optic Voice Communication System
Assemble a simple voice
communication system using plastic fiber as signal transmission
medium.
11.
Simulation of Fiber Optic Intensity Sensor
Set up a fiber optic sensing
system with a 2 x 2 coupler using a bidirectional operation.
12.
Wavelength Demultiplexing
Build a dispersive grating
and a fiber array to demonstrate wavelength demultiplexing of a
white light input and three channel out
